Falling Forward | Starting Chemotherapy and Greenlighting Tumi & Me

Well, unfortunately, my pipe dream of not having to do chemo did not come true.

BUT...

My dream of getting this proof-of-concept short GREENLIT did (over $5k). ❤️ But, we technically are still 1170 short of hitting our 10K goal. So please donate! This campaigning will end sooner and you won’t have to hear this same messaging again for a while like a broken record.

And that is because of so many of YOU.

Thanks to everyone who donated, shared the campaign, sent encouragement, offered resources, or simply reminded me that I’m not doing this alone, Tumi & Me is officially moving forward.

I cannot begin to express how grateful I am.

As for the next chapter of this whole cancer adventure...

I’m mostly scared.

The chemo pills have been ordered. They arrive Tuesday, and then it begins: 5 days on, 23 days off, every month for the next year.

A year sounds like a really long time.

But I think what scares me most is simply not knowing what it’s going to feel like. What will it do to my body? How bad will the nausea be? How tired will I get? Will I be able to keep doing all the things I’ve slowly fought my way back to doing?

I hope life continues returning to normal.

I hope my hair keeps growing back.

I hope my body continues surprising me with how resilient it can be.

And I hope that a year from now, I can look back at this post and think, Wow. I was so scared of something I eventually learned how to live through.

The good news is that because my chemotherapy is in pill form, I can work on set!

So... assuming the film industry hasn’t completely forgotten I exist while I’ve been off fighting a brain tumor:

HI. I’M BACK. 😂

If you need a 1st AD, line producer, or editor, I am officially open to work.

In the meantime, I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing since I was cleared after surgery: taking care of my body, staying active, and getting stronger.

I’m going to keep working out.

I’m going to travel and explore and have adventures.

I’m going to spend time with people I love.

I’m going to keep making things.

And most importantly, I’m going to keep telling stories.

Because if this year has taught me anything, it’s that we don't get to control everything that happens to us.

But we do get to decide what we make out of it.

And apparently I decided to turn my brain tumor into a claymation character and make a movie about it.

Seems reasonable.

Venice Sunset

Tumi & Me is happening. 🎬❤️

Our crowdfunding campaign officially ends September 13—TOMORROW—so there is still time to help us make this film even stronger.

Please donate if you can. If you can't, sharing the campaign helps tremendously.

And if you happen to have a wealthy relative contemplating the purchase of another yacht, perhaps gently remind them that instead they could help an ambitious cancer girl make an impactful film about this completely gnarly, terrifying, absurd, and unexpectedly beautiful healing journey.

Just saying. There are already plenty of yachts.

Thank you for helping me turn one of the hardest chapters of my life into something meaningful.

Onward. ❤️ P.S. You can find one of our Get Reelisms books “ABCs of Filmmaking” at the Austin Public Library now!
